**Please make sure your child reads the book in his/her R.E.D. bag on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The R.E.D. bag should be returned to school on Thursdays.

Phonics and Language usage- We will introducing the oy and oi sound.  The general rule is oy will be found at the end of a word and oi is found in the middle of the word.

​The test date will be: March 4th
Please practice spelling words each night. 
Spelling Words: how. now, plows, frowning, brown, crown, haul, launch, August, paused, cause, haunt, want, off, when

Reading Comprehension Skill- We are working on the comprehension skill of cause and effect.    Students need to understand the relationship between what happened and why it happened. We will practice this skill in isolation and then ask students to apply it while reading longer text.

Vocabulary- The test date will be: March 6th
synonym--- a word that means the same thing as another word

dependable---someone you can count on to help you

selfish--when you think of only yourself

spoiled--- ruined

gloomy---cloudy and dark outside

adventurous---willing to take a chance on new things

Grammar- 
We will be learning about synonyms. Students will need to match 2 words that mean the same thing and be able to give a synonym for a given word.

During dictation sentences we continue to practice the types of sentences and words that need to start with a capital letter. Please continue to review the skills listed below.

 Below are the times when a capital letter should be used:
  • The first letter of a sentence
  • Names of people
  • Names of places
  • Days of the week
  • Months of the year
  • I is always capitalized

The 3 types of sentences are:
statement or telling sentence ends in a period
question or asking sentence ends in a question mark
exciting sentence ends in an exclamation point


Math-  We are in Chapter 8, Measurement.  This week students will measure with 1 inch tiles, a ruler and estimate lengths.

Science-We have moved into the next unit of Earth Science.  Students will be learning how the land can change quickly because of a flood, tornado, hurricane, and volcano.

Social Studies-  We will begin Chapter 3, Our World. We will focus on maps and globes.
